Writer + Director + Producer + Editor
Level is a ten minute documentary that follows my journey as an action sport enthusiast and journalist. I explore new territories, raise controversial debate with industry professionals and I use personal experience as a motive for change. Inspired by the representation of females in action sports media, Level tackles gender issues, favouring equal opportunities in media coverage, prize money and job roles.
Women are underrepresented in the media, not only on our screens but as industry professionals as well. With television, internet and radio broadcast being one of the most important and influential powers in our world today, Emma Shoesmith believes it is vital that equality and diversity exist though all channels. There has been notable advancement in the broadcasting of women’s sport, however a mere 7% of the overall mediated material actually includes females. The coverage of women’s sports via it’s many outlets, focuses on one particular stereotype and concentrates on the market ability of an athlete and not their skill. Level the documentary celebrates the people who are pioneering the change and producing media content that will inspire younger generations to get involved and above all be themselves.
“Who are we to deny anyone their right to self expression or to decide that one representation is better than the other?”
